Virginia Marin, Jane Britton, Jane Logan, and Madge Corbitt competed for the Druce Trophy at Bramley Golf Club, 6 July 2017.
The WCGC Ladies team finished 5th out of 60 teams from all over Surrey in The Druce Competition 2017 as they fought to defend the title they won last year at the first time of entering.
This is one of Surrey’s most prestigious events requiring two pairs of players from each club, with a bronze and silver player playing foursomes. Major Surrey clubs compete including Wentworth, Sunningdale, The Royal, Wimbledon Park, and Malden.
WCGC started the day just after 8.00 am playing alongside Walton Heath who had the recent Surrey Ladies Captain playing off 6 in their team. The first pair out for WCGC was Madge Corbitt and Virginia Marin who posted 94 gross, as did Walton Heath, giving Jane Logan and Jane Britton a very tough target as the second pair out. Coming in at almost 5.00 pm in steaming heat, the ladies were thrilled to have shaved a further 11 shots off the morning team’s total and so moved into second place. But as the rest of the teams came in with final scores and the 1/4 of combined team handicaps were applied, the finalised scores placed our ladies in 5th position.
Speaking of their success captain Jane Logan said: “This is a huge competition with 240 competitors, involving more than 50 people behind the scenes from the Surrey committee to scorers, referees, catering staff, meeters and greeters, car parkers etc. For WCGC to achieve 1st and 5th out of 60 clubs in the two years they have entered is quite extraordinary given the size of our club. No clubs that have won the event have successfully defended the title but our ladies certainly gave the opposition a good run for their money!"
