2022-2023 Men's Captain Steve Murray and Lady Captain Jackie Reiss welcome you to Wimbledon Common Golf Club

This year's captains are fundraising for the Don's Local Action Group. Read more about their volunteers who work to keep the communities of Merton, Wandsworth, and Kingston fed, connected, and supported. https://donslocalaction.org/

It has been fantastic to have served as Men’s Vice Captain alongside John Kendall for the past two years and it is an honour now to step up to be the Men’s Captain of this wonderful club.

- Steve Murray, Men's Captain 2022-2023 -

I am Steve Murray and I have been a member here since 1996, enjoying every minute of it and relishing being asked at various times to represent WCGC in matches against other clubs, in the Triangular and Jubilee tournaments and in the Surrey and National team championships. These invitations have been a bonus set against the background of a full schedule of club competitions and other major events like St. George’s Day and the St. Patrick’s Day Irish challenge.

I mention this to demonstrate that we are a thriving club, with a beautiful but tricky course, welcoming players of all ages and abilities. I shall be working hard this year to maintain and enhance this involvement, and I look forward to golfing with as many members as possible during my tenure.

Our Ladies’ Captain, Jackie, has been volunteering with the Dons Local Action Group (DLAG) and has seen what a great job they do in providing all sorts of assistance to the underprivileged in our community. Accordingly, we have jointly chosen DLAG as our charity for this year and I look forward to your generous backing. I hope that I, alongside my Vice Captain, Robert Frew, can count on your help.

Thanks to John Kendall and Liz de Bay for their enthusiasm and wisdom over the last two years.

Enjoy your golf. See you on the course or in the clubhouse soon.

Hello, I’m Jackie Reiss, and I’m delighted to be Ladies’ Captain of our friendly and welcoming club. I look forward to seeing you on the course during the next year!

- Jackie Reiss, Lady Captain 2022-2023 -

I joined the Club in 2015 via its Academy programme, converting to full membership the following year. Having played ‘holiday golf’ on and off for a few years, I found the Academy provided a great basis to develop confidence and skills to then be able to enjoy our lovely woodland course. And the course is indeed a joy – not the easiest of courses as it is quite tight in parts – but lovely in any season.

The club is friendly and unstuffy; new members are welcomed and given the opportunity to get handicaps quickly and join in with competitive and social golf as soon as they are ready. The Ladies’ Section is vibrant and fully integrated into the club and we have many mixed events as well as well as a substantial and varied Ladies’ golf and social programme, and an active Bridge club.

Over the past two years our Ladies’ Section has continued to grow as more people have been able to work flexibly enough to make time for golf; and in addition to new golfers, we have many ‘returners’. In the coming year I look forward to ensuring that there is plenty of opportunity for members to play competitively or sociably and continuing to develop our match squads for Surrey events such as the Pearson and Wallis trophies.

Steve Murray, the Men’s Captain, and I are proud to support local charity Dons Local Action Group (DLAG) as our Captains’ Charity. DLAG was formed in the early days of the COVID pandemic and has grown to an impressive and vital organisation with 2000 local volunteers providing food boxes to families and vulnerable people in Merton, Wandsworth and Kingston boroughs suffering from food poverty. It also refurbishes and supplies laptops to schools in the area and provides a furniture exchange so that donated items can be sent out to families who need it.

I am grateful to our retiring Lady Captain, Liz de Bay, and Men’s Captain John Kendall who have done a fantastic job steering us through two very uncertain years. I look forward to working with my Ladies’ Vice Captain, Deborah Smith to continue the excellent progress that has been made.
